The Postal Service; More Government Run Amuck!

So the U. S. Postal Service says it could go bankrupt. Sure e-mail has certainly changed the way we communicate and people just aren't mailing letters like they used to. But consider FedEX and UPS, private enterprise that has made a business out of delivering hard goods.

Where did the USPS go wrong? Perhaps they live in the past ensnared in a bureaucratic culture that either refuses or lacks the ability to adapt to the day.

You want to cut costs? Just a couple of thoughts. Why does the Postal Service commission all of these stamps? I mean, it's nice, but do we need to promote this cause and honor that individual. Call me a simpleton, but won't a simple flag stamp get the letter to it's destination just as quickly. I mean, we don't see FedEX designing new mailing boxes each month and giving us a choice when we head to their office. "Would you like the 'Scarlet Pansy Box' or perhaps the 'Take Your Pet To Work' container?" No, its the purple, orange and white box or nothing. And while we're on the subject. I know it's not what's causing the downfall of the U.S. mail (or is it) but tell me, am I the only one or do you find it hard to believe that anyone actually looks forward each Christmas to buying that ugly commemorative Postal Service Icon Christmas Ball. Or how many of us walk into the post office and walk out with the cuddly little post office stuffed bear or bronze embossed USPS key chain. And do they really need to be selling tiny postal trucks for the thousands of kids who shop at the Post Office? Come on. Government... and they wonder why we've had it.

The Rest Of The Story

He would greet us with the trademark "Hello Americans..... Staaaannnd by for News!!" When broadcast legend Paul Harvey past away this weekend, so too did a radio era. He was the last of a generation of journalists who had that unique ability to paint a picture in the minds eye with nothing but carefully crafted words and a technique that set Harvey apart from the rest, the masterful use of the inflection, the intonation, the.... pause. No one in broadcasting could wrap his arms around a story like Paul Harvey.

From the time I was in high school and knew I wanted to make a living at this craft, Paul Harvey proved an inspiration. I would wait with great anticipation to hear his news and comment as well as his Rest Of The Story broadcasts. It was a privilege to one day host my own talk show with the Rest Of The Story as my lead-in. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Harvey in person at a Radio Television News Directors convention in San Antonio, Texas in 1991. He addressed us all and I listened as a grandson would at the knee of his grandfather. I hinged on each word, each exhortation, each challenge to get it right as journalists and to maintain a standard worthy of the calling.

He once said of his unique style that as a young broadcaster that he tried to imitate someone else until his boss gave him this advice. If you try to be like someone else, the best you can ever hope for is second best. Be your own person. Good advise that I took to heart early on in my own career.

I admired so much about the man, but probably nothing more than his ability throughout his career to remain unchanged by fame, fortune and popularity. He was at his death, the same grounded individual who got into the business as a young high schooler in 1933. Paul Harvey was a man of high ideals, true integrity and deep faith. In a world where it's not always popular to share that faith, Paul Harvey never shied away from that important part of his life. As my sister so appropriately put it in an e-mail to me upon his passing, "Now Paul Harvey does really know . . . the rest of the story."

Rest in peace, Mr. Harvey. Job well done. . . . . . . Good Day!!

It Got Me Thinking

I stumbled across a video on You Tube this morning that caused me to turn a little introspective I suppose. The majority of the piece is made up of photographs of what we can only imagine to be family members through the years, exteriors of homes, landscapes and such. But what it brought to my mind is how brief life really is and if we are not careful, it will pass us by and we won't even realize the moments we missed. Each of us has been given one life; no dress rehearsal. This is the real deal and I don't know about you but I want to drink it in to its fullest with no regrets.

The message this weekend by Pastor Tim Chambers at Shore Fellowship was all about finding balance in life. The truth is when you find that balance, you'll be less likely to miss what really matters.

It's fun to look back at photographs that mark the milestones and moments of your life. But even more rewarding, is the ability we are given with that glance of an image to recall sounds and smells, laughter and tears as we are immediately taken in our minds eye to that moment in time.

A wise man by the name of Jim tells us that our life is only a vapor. Here for a moment and then it vanishes just like the morning fog. Jim reminds us to major on the important things in life and realize where each breath comes from to begin with.

Does any of this make sense to you? I don't know; I saw this video and it just got me thinking.

The Little Lamb

I'm awaken at 4 this morning by the soft whisper and warm breath of my 3 1/2 year old. I'm startled at first as I opened my eyes to this little person, concerned look on her face, standing before me in her soft, polka dot sleeper. "I can't find my lamb Daddy." "Let's go look. I'll find it for you," as I stumbled out of bed and followed down the hall.

There it was right under her bed where it fell. (She had made a point to tell me earlier as I said good night that tonight she was going to snuggle her little lamb.) Now, as I handed her this tiny stuffed animal she looked up at me, "Thanks", she whispered as I tucked her in. "Night, Daddy... don't let the bed bugs bite." She smiled and closed her eyes.

As I walked out of her room, down the hall and back to bed the parable of the lost sheep came to mind. Jesus tells the story of the shepherd who had a hundred sheep and one of them got lost. He says when that happened, didn't the shepherd leave the ninety-nine and go look for the one. And when he found it, he returned and rejoiced. Jesus goes on to tell us that that is how God looks on us when we who are lost come to Him.

Even in the middle of the night, startled out of a sound sleep, how could I as a father not respond to my little girl who's little lamb was missing. In the same way, our heavenly Father is ready to respond. All He is waiting for is for us to come to Him and share our concerns and burdens.

As my head hit the pillow, I smiled to myself as I thought of how much comfort I brought my child. God wants to do the same for each one of us if we'll let Him. I hope that thought comforts you today.

His Priorities Scare Me

Did you read in The Times of London ; out of all the pressing issues on the desk of the new President, when he could have reached out to anyone during the opening hours of his first full day in office, we learn that the very first "world leader" Barack Obama apparently called was Palestinian President Abbas. Are you serious? I'm telling you, as I said over and over during the campaign, there is a lot of truth to the old saying, You are known by the company you keep. When this guy is the first "leader" you reach out to, I say watch out!

While I'm speaking out, doesn't it scare you that in the words of The Times, "Even before he got to work yesterday, the new Administration had halted all military trials of terror suspects at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba." Not only that, the President is expected to sign an executive order today that will close the camp within a year. The reason, get this: “to further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice”. How does shutting down Gitmo further national security? Remember some of these 'detainees' have openly praised the actions of 9/11 and said how proud they are of that day. If someone can explain how releasing these thugs furthers national security and foreign policy interests, please!! We are living in dangerous times. I said to a friend, I can't believe he's doing these things especially with so many other pressing issues at hand. My friend said, "why not? It shouldn't surprise you in the least."

Meanwhile, the Drive-by Media, Washington insiders and so many others across the country are still euphoric over all the hope and change. I say, be very careful what you ask for.

I Am Inspired!

I'm inspired this morning! Not by a new President, but by what he represents. And it's not what you think. I'm not talking about the politics of it all. For the most part, I don't agree with the policies of this administration (although I want to give him a chance). I'm talking about something different. When I woke this morning, I couldn't help but imagine what Mr Obama was thinking as his feet hit the floor for the first time in the White House; as he watched the brilliant sun rise out his window. He walks down the hall. "Good Morning, Mr. President." "How are feeling this morning, Mr. President". He opens the door to the oval office and for the first time, sits behind the desk. Wow! "Here we go", he must think. He is off and running.

There is something about newness, fresh starts and clean slates. Sure there is much on his plate (more I dare say than on any of ours). But nevertheless at least for this morning there is an ability to tackle the tasks before him with fresh eyes.

So, from where does my inspiration come? It's in this. This morning, though you and I may not be new to our roles, we still have the ability to start fresh. We too can look at the world around us as if for the first time. It was Jesus who said, "I have come to make all things new." We can look to Him for the guidance, wisdom, strength and inspiration to inspire and impact our own world around us. If each of us could for a single moment grasp the concept that we have the ability to affect change in our world, we'd turn things upside down!.

So this morning . . . be inspired by the fact that YOU can approach each day with the knowledge that you too can inspire, lead, impact and affect change right where you are; right where God has planted you!!

I close my radio show each afternoon by reminding my listeners to go out and make a difference. Do it! Be the difference maker right where you are today. Then write to me and let me know how you are impacting your world. I'd love to hear from you.

Let's Never Forget - Say A Prayer Today

This morning at 8:45 as I sat in the parking lot of a convenience story, I looked around me and saw people walking in and out, checking out at the counter, getting gasoline for their cars, most I'm sure not giving a second thought as to the significance of the moment. At that very minute 7 years ago, the first airplane crashed into the World Trade Center setting off a series of events that day which would forever alter our world and how we see it. As painful as it is (for family and friends of victims especially), we need to see that video again and again of what took place on that day. We should never forget or allow anyone else to forget or minimize the attack that occurred not only on this country, but freedom loving people everywhere. Thank God we have not seen another day like that since September 11, 2001, but that does not mean there are not evil, terrible monster still out there who wish us harm. We must remain vigilant, not let down our guard and be willing to stand up and fight for what is good and decent.

Encouraging news today out of the New York Times that President Bush secretly approved orders in July that for the first time allow American Special Operations forces to carry out ground assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of the Pakistani government. Hopefully this will lead to bringing Bin Laden and others to justice. Will it stop terrorism and the on-going threat? No, but it is a step in the right direction. If this nation is to remain free, it is imperative that the next President and Congress live up to their Constitutional responsibilities to protect and defend us or we will most certainly crumble as a country.

Sometime today, take a few minutes to reflect on the horrific day 7 years ago determined to do all in your power to hold government accountable to insure it will never happen again. And do one other thing as well. Pray for our nation, continued protection and for the families who's loved ones paid the ultimate price.

Palin Pick - Smart Move

John McCain's choice for the VP spot on the GOP ticket is a very smart move. Sarah Palin, the current governor of Alaska solidifies the still wavering Conservative base, she comes from a state with a first hand interest in and the means to help solve the energy challenge, she's articulate and she totally negates the Joe Biden Democratic VP choice. Biden, who was chosen for among other reasons his pit bull, attack dog style simply can not use this style when debating Palin. It won't work. He'll come off like a grumpy old man lashing out at a woman. There are a myriad of other reasons why Palin is a smart choice. She is as far from a Washington insider as you can get, she was 8 years old when Joe Biden first entered Washington (so much for Obama moving in a fresh new direction) and in her short tenure as Alaska's Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Palin has a track record of taking on big government and saving taxpayer dollars. Sure, she doesn't have a deep resume but neither does Obama. And then there is the Hillary factor. I'm sure the McCain campaign is banking on disenfranchised women voters to make the jump out of their frustration with Barrack Obama. It is going to be an amazing race for the White House. Theyyy'reeeee Grrreat!!!

Lighten up. Now that Olympic great Michael Phelps has inked an advertising deal with Kellogg's and Frosted Flakes, medical and health "experts" are blasting the guy for the bad example he is setting. One nutritionist said, "I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian," Rebecca Solomon of Mount Sinai Medical Center went on to say, "I would rather see him promoting Fiber One. I would rather see him promoting oatmeal. I would even rather see him promoting Cheerios." I guess so, but I really don't think Michael Phelps will singlehandedly sway the breakfast eating habits of children around the world. The point I'm making is, there are far worse things going on to be concerned about then Phelps and his Frosted Flakes. I say, back off. Go ahead kids, have a bowl of Frosted Flakes and enjoy. I'm sure this won't be the first time you'll hear it but as Tony the Tiger would say: "Like Michael Phelps . . . Theyyy'reeeee Grrreat !!!"

A Friend Has Gone Home

You know how sometimes in life, you get to know someone (although it may be brief) but they make a lasting impact. Bill Becker is one of those people. Our paths crossed at our church (Shore Fellowship) less than a year ago. He had come off a bout of cancer and I was in the middle of mine. We connected. He shared with me that I was an encouragement to him as he read my blog during my journey through Leukemia. Interestingly enough as the next several months unfolded, Bill became an encouragement to me. His cancer returned. Ups and downs. Uncertainty. Good news. Not so good news. Through it all, Bill praised his Creator. If you haven't seen an interview I did with him over 3 months ago, you need to.

Bill passed peacefully to glory last evening. My families thoughts and prayers are with his wife Kathy and his family.

Bill was and still is an inspiration to so many. The apostle Paul reminds us in a letter to Timothy that it should be our goal as believers to be able to say with him, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Therefore there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." Bill has done just that.

You can say nothing greater of a person than that they were a "friend of God". Bill was not only a friend to so many of us, he was and is today "a friend of God". Thanks for touching our lives Bill. Thanks for crossing our paths. We are all so much richer for having known you.

A Giant Has Left Us

I got a lump in my throat this afternoon when I heard of the passing of NBC's Tim Russert. The political junkie that I am, I looked forward each weekend to listening to Meet The Press downloaded to my ipod as I drove to anchor the 11 p.m. news. Although his routes were deep in Democrat politics, I felt that Russert was by far the most objective, hard-hitting interviewer in Washington. I always learned more about candidates, issues and controversies each week. No matter what their persuasion, Tim hit them all hard and equally. My favorite shows were always the ones featuring his political roundtable of James Carville, Mary Matalin and Doris Kearns Goodwin.

I remember Russert saying once that even with all he had achieved, each time he walked up the driveway at the White House, he pinched himself. He still never got over that a blue collar boy from Buffalo could sit down and interview the President of the United States. He would always say, "What a country!" I think it was that grounded sense of never forgetting his heritage and roots that kept Tim Russert in touch with the issues that face this nation. We are all the richer for having had his insight and analysis all these years. We will all miss him tremendously in the weeks and months ahead. Election night just won't be the same without Tim and his dry erase board.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tim's family and his colleagues during this difficult time.

The Company You Keep

As Obama and Clinton go head to head tonight in the city of "brotherly love" it will be interesting to watch what happens. It has been a long time since the two met in a debate. You may not realize it, but since they last met on the same stage, we had Wright, Bosnian comments and the "bitter, clinging" remarks. Even through all of that, it seems as if Obama has come out of this no worse for the wear. However, as former Congressman John LeBoutillier pointed out on my radio show last night, we are talking about the reaction of Democrats. By the time we get to the Fall and the general election, it could be a whole different story. Or will all of this be "old news" by then and everyone ready to move on to new things.

I've always been taught you are known by the company you keep and if that is the case, Barrack Obama certainly has poor judgement in the people with whom he keeps company including his own wife! Who know what will happen at tonight's debate and the way this campaign has played out so far, all bets are off. But it does appear more than likely that Obama will be the nominee and I'm counting on the common sense of the American voter to realize this Fall that what we are discovering about this guy and his close associates combined with what we still don't know about him is way too much of a risk for us to take with such an important and power position as President of the United States.

Wonder what Climate Guru Al Gore thinks about this development. The head of the World Meteorological Organization says La Nina - the weather phenomenon which is cooling the Pacific - is likely to trigger a small drop in average global temperatures compared with last year. Holy reversal Batman. This is really ridiculous and yet we, the skeptics are being told all along that our heads are in the sand and we refuse to face the fact that our world is spinning out of control. Combined that with Ted Turners latest comments last week saying that over population and global warming are leading us all down a path of destruction. When will the average "Joe and Jane" America wake up to the fact that we have been sold a bill of goods by Gore and his pals. I still can't believe he won the Nobel Peace Prize. What a joke; a real laughing stock.

Who's Country Is This Anyway?

This picture was taken not in Mexico City, but downtown Reno, Nevada. Not only is it a direct slap in the face of all United States citizens, its illegal to fly any flag above the stars and stripes in this country. But this is what is happening. It's the frog in the simmering pot of warming water. If we don't do something, we will all awake one day speaking Spanish and under the domination of our neighbors to the South.

I know it's not the politically correct view to have and many see it as downright intolerant, but I maintain the view that if you are in this country, you should learn how to speak the language of this country. Those in Congress who continue to be unwilling to make English the "official" language of the United States are in my view nothing more than willing accomplices to the takeover of the United States of America. Abraham Lincoln said it correctly over 125 years ago. If this country ever falls, it will fall from within. That is exactly what is happening.

By the way, a veteran courageously took down both flags with a knife, walked away with the stars and stripes and then left the Mexican flag on the sidewalk. The shop owners who presumably put up the flags stood by outside as he did it. When a reporter asked for their reaction, they walked back in their shop and shut the door, saying nothing. Who knows ... maybe they didn't speak English!!!

How Third Grade Has Changed

I remember classmates almost coming to tears on the final day of my third grade class. Our teacher, Mrs. Supercho was a sweet, gentle kind lady. I remember lining up to leave on the final day of class, approaching my teacher and giving her a big hug. Sure that was going on 40 years ago and times have definitely changed. I guess they have!!!

Just read about the third grade classmates in a Georgia elementary school who were caught by school officials before they could carry out their plan to physically harm their teacher. The adjacent picture is just one of several showing some the "weapons" the THIRD graders planned to use. Waycross, Georgia Police Lt. Dwayne Caswell said of the students, "They had a broken steak knife, a crystal paper weight, toy handcuffs, several items and tape and stuff." Sure, these are not the actions of typical third grades or at least I hope not. But it sure says something about a society and culture that seems to see more and more cases of younger and younger children expressing such anger, disrespect and outright evil actions. I can't help but ask what would drive third graders to want to do something like this and more importantly what kind of homes and parents do these students come from?

Bob Beckel Asks Stupid Question and More

Ever since this issue erupted with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Fox News Contributor Bob Beckel keeps asking the same stupid question which ironically he thinks is so clever..... and he did it again tonight on Hannity and Colmes. He asked should every child who attends Wrights church be denied a right to run for President of The United States? He asks the question with a real
"gotcha" kind of tone in his voice as if to say... Ah, see...what do you say to that, huh, huh? The answer is simple Bob. Of course a child attending Wrights church has a right to run for President. The big difference is Barrack Obama is an ADULT sitting under the hateful, incendiary speech of this man; an adult Bob! He needs to be held accountable for his judgement as an ADULT who wants to be Commander In Chief... not a CHILD who may or may not have a choice as to where he or she attends worship services. Please Bob, p-l-e-a-s-e find a new "gotcha" question to ask. You can do a lot better.
Side-note: Obama said today in a speech that he finds it hard to understand how the media and others keep taking a few comments and repeating them and not looking at the three sermons Rev. Wright preached every week for 20 years. That still doesn't discount what he did say. I don't care what else he said in the 20 years. Amazing to me how now many in the media are doing nothing but praising Barrack Obama for his speech last week addressing race as the man who dares to take on the issue and attempt to move this country forward. How does a man who sat under hate, race baiting and anti-American, anti-Christian speech suddenly become the "champion" of moving us forward. Sick logic that makes no sense to me. How about you.

Returning To WOND

Beginning next Monday, The Jeff Whitaker Show returns to WOND. Looking forward to getting back to the airwaves of Southern New Jersey. My show which was cancelled over two years ago will return this time from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursdays in the Atlantic City, NJ radio market. No real surprises this time around. The show will basically follow the same format which moved it the number one time slot from 3-4. We'll talk breaking news of the day, politics - local and national, social concerns, authors and an occasional offbeat guest, plus plenty of input from listeners. I hope you'll return, if you were a listener before and give us a try if you never had a chance to catch me the first time around.

Who said the following of talk show host Don Imus one year ago? "...But I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude." ANSWER: The man from Illinois who would be President of the United States. Oh, how quickly he backs down in his strong stance. Sure Barrack Obama delivered a flowery speech this week condemning the remarks of his former "pastor". But last year when Don Imus, (who makes a living out of sarcasm and quick wit, tongue and cheek monologue) spoke out of line, Senator Obama refused to give him a pass and called for his immediate firing saying, "He (Imus) didn't just cross the line, he fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America." If that is an accurate characterization of Don Imus, what in the world can be said of the series of incendiary comments by Jeremiah Wright.
It's not just the Jeremiah Wright comments. Now World Net Daily is reporting that Wrights church, (Barrack Obama's church) reprinted a manifesto by Hamas that defended terrorism as legitimate resistance, refused to recognize the right of Israel to exist and compared the terror group's official charter which calls for the murder of Jews to America's Declaration of Independence.
Where will it all stop? How much more does the American voter needs to know before we collectively say, enough is enough?

The Audacity of Obama's Hypocrisy

So now when the heat is on, Barack Obama denounces the words of his pastor of 20 years, the man who married he and his wife, baptized his daughters and preached in the pulpit that Obama has called his home church. Is Obama responsible for the comments of his pastor? Of course not. But I can't imagine why you would attend a church, consider someone a close friend and give to the ministry of someone who preaches hate, racism and division. Tonight on Fox News, Barack Obama said he was unaware of many of the comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright until the last couple of days. This raises a lot of questions not the least of which is how anyone could on one hand be so close to someone (Rev. Wright) who is Obama's own words was like "an uncle to me", and on the other hand not know he held these extreme views. That doesn't say a whole lot for the judgment of the man who would be our next President. This whole issue answers other questions raised in the last couple of weeks. Hearing these statements by the Rev. Wright makes it much easier to understand where Michelle Obama has developed her beliefs about the United States of America considering she sat under the ministry of Wright.
Recently, Barack Obama delivered a stump speech where he touted the famous words of Dr. Martin Luther King, and words of the Declaration of Independence and other inspiring quotes followed by the rhetorical question, "Just Words"? Obama hammered home the ascertation that words are powerful and have meaning.
You're right about that Mr. Obama. In light of the recent revelations, my question to you is, Rev. Jeremiah Wrights sermons and messages, just words? If this had been any other candidate other than Obama he or she would have had to resign quicker than you can shake a stick. The fact that Barack Obama is still in this race is THE AUDACITY OF HYPOCRISY!

The Bucket List

My wife and I saw "The Bucket List" this past weekend and we both came away counting our blessings. Our brush with cancer this past Summer in a way that is hard to explain has been a gift as opposed to a curse. When you are faced with your own mortality, you are given a new appreciation for each day.

In "The Bucket List", two men (played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) from two vastly different worlds are confronted with the ravages of cancer and brevity of life. They both determine to pursue a list of places they want to see, emotions they want to internalize and things they want to do before they "kick the bucket". While it's unlikely the scenario would ever take place, the overriding message is one we can all learn from.

The New Testament Apostle James said that our life is but a vapor. Here one moment and gone the next. We would all do well to remember that and determine to make the very most of each breath we are given. Being diagnosed with Leukemia (seemingly out of the blue) actually has increased my faith, drew our family closer and gave us all a much keener appreciation for the healthy days we are given. We now have much more compassion and care for those who are going through their own struggles whether health related or otherwise. It's hard to explain what an experience like this will do for you and through you.

I encourage you to see "The Bucket List". Introspection is good for the soul.

So I'm reading today that John McCains mother says when it comes to her sons electability, some in the Republican Party will just have to "hold their noses" and vote for her son. Gee, thanks Mom! What that points out to me is that even she realizes her son doesn't appeal to a lot of the GOP despite his increasing reference to the Reagan Revolution and pandering to the Right. Strange how so many main -stream media pundits refer to McCains broad appeal. Too many people are discounting the base support needed to take McCain to victory. Without the core Conservative base of the party, it's going to be rough ride. Over 200 million people in this great US of A and we can't come up with more dynamic, qualified candidates for the office of President. The shame is Mrs. McCain might be right. Only a lot of voters might hold their nose with both hands leaving no way to pull the lever. So they'll just stay home on election day!

New Jersey Chamber On Board With Corzine

Benjamin Franklin once said at the signing of the Declaration of Independence that "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hand separately." So I have to wonder what they were thinking when the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce backed Governor Jon Corzine's plan for massive toll hikes on state highways. The very organization in place to have the best interest of business at heart sells out to politics. If you can't count on the Chamber of Commerce to look after you, who can you count on. And for what?

Hazel Gluck, Chamber executive committee member said "the Governor’s plan is the best option available on the table to us to fix the state’s fiscal problems. It is time for us to move forward and get to the business of growing the economy. The Governor’s plan will help us to achieve the goal of making New Jersey a pro-investment state.” Grow the economy, pro-investment? How do you grow the economy when you force businesses who use New Jersey toll roads to transports their goods to face huge increases in the cost of moving those goods? How is it helping grow the economy when working men and women are saddled with an 800% road tax? Who wants to invest in a state that chokes its residents and businesses with tax after tax? Not most businesses if you read how many companies are pulling up stakes and heading out of Dodge.

String up the noose. I think we're all about to hang separately.

Bill Is Burying Hill

Did you hear the latest? Former President Bill Clinton says what we need to do is slowdown the economy if we are to address the "serious issue" of global warming. First of all. The evidence is out there for anyone to see. All this hype over global warming is just that ... hype. Three decades ago, if you remember, we were on the verge of an ice age. Wake up everyone. It's all about politics.

And if that's not bad enough. Now a former President of the United States is advocating slowing down the economy in the wake of a recession. Yea, that's just the signal we need to be sending the rest of the world. Bet Hillary is throwing china across the room this morning. Her husband, his temper and reckless statements are quickly burying her in the ashes. Obama needs to keep hammering away at the notion of "not knowing who he is running against". If Hillary and her ideas aren't bad enough, her husband is easily putting the nail in the coffin of a failed race for the White House. If she is to survive much longer Hillary needs to send Bill off on a long vacation ... and fast.

Private Property?

Hey taxpayers of Middle Township (Cape May County, NJ) you better ask for your money back. It seems the local Board of Education feels that the Performing Arts Center in your township is private property. That's right. You paid for and now it's private property. So, who is the private person or persons who own it?

If you didn't hear already, a former candidate for New Jersey Governor, Steve Lonegan and South Jersey Attorney and WIBG radio talk show host Seth Grossman were both arrested last weekend for protesting outside of a dog and pony show Governor Corzine brought to town to explain his plan to up the tolls on New Jersey highways. (His way of fixing the fiscal mess we are in in Trenton). So Lonegan and Grossman were handing out flyers explaining why we shouldn't buy into the Governors plan and they held up signs reinforcing the message. They were both handcuffed and arrested after the Middle Township Board of Educations Walter Landgraf, the school district's business administrator told Lonegan he must take the protest off school grounds."It's not public property. It's owned by the Board of Education. There's a difference," Landgraf said. "You're going to have to leave the property, please. I'd like you to leave the school board's property."

It's bad enough that the Governor is sticking it once again to the hard working residents of New Jersey with more taxes, now a taxpayer funded Public Arts Center is being referred to as private property. How arrogant! How disgusting! How dare they!!!!

Corzine's Tax Explosion!

Here we go again. Stick to the residents. Jon Corzine's proposed toll increase is ludicrous. My question is, if the state is in such a terrible fiscal condition, why are we waiting until 2010 to implement the toll hikes? I'll save you the guesswork. Politics. Elections. That's why. When are we going to learn in this state that liberal, tax and spend politicians are not the answer to our problems... THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. I'm tired of hearing how we got here and how it's too late to go back. The solution is ALWAYS more taxes, more fee's. How about we cut the state workforce. How about state legislators take a major salary cut. Don't hold your breath. And you know when the money starts to come it from the toll hikes, it won't be enough. It's NEVER enough because politicians can't help themselves. They are robbing us blind and we sit by and take it. You know 200 years ago we had a Revolution in this country over less than this.

Stories That Impact

Sunday mornings Worship Service at Shore Fellowship was far reaching in its impact. We planned one of the worship songs around an opportunity to tell real life stories of change. The song, From The Inside Out tells of how Jesus changes lives from the inside out. New lives, new direction, new purpose. In the middle of the song we asked several members of Shore Fellowship to come on stage and share their life change story with everyone. Nothing fancy or profound about that idea, but it was the story each of them shared that touched lives. One by one they testified, this was my life before Christ; this is my life after finding Christ.

Each of our lives tell a story. Some of us have a story of victory, others of struggles, failures, the ups and downs of life. If you were to title the chapter of your life as you are experiencing it this very day, what would the title be? No matter where your chapter finds you on your life journey, it's never too late to make the next chapter what I call, the turnaround chapter.

The chapters in our book already written can't be changed, but the next chapter is yet to be written. No Woman Is Illegal?

Talk about gratuitous. When Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was visiting a Las Vegas neighborhood, a man told Mrs. Clinton that his wife is illegal and she compassionately responded that no woman is illegal. What does that mean? As President of the United States, Mrs. Clinton, I assume would raise her hand and pledge to uphold the Constitution and I do believe the laws of the land (enforced or not) do state that there are circumstances when people in this country are considered illegal and one would assume at least some of those illegals are women. If this is how Mrs. Clinton views the issue of illegal immigration, I have no faith in her ability to even come close to addressing this crisis.

Then she said of failed mortgages and vacant neighborhoods, "We treat these problems as if one is guacamole and one is chips, when ... they both go together," she said. I guess she was trying to relate to the neighborhood as she stood by taking notes and eating tortilla chips. Forgive me if all of this causes me to choke on my chips. Maybe next week when she visits Little Italy she'll compare the issue to spaghetti and meatballs or in Chinatown she'll talk about Kung Pow Chicken and Soy sauce. Somebody stop me!! Now I'm hungry.

The sad thing is politicians in general think this is the way to relate to the people and then they play on the fears of these people and all too many people buy into it. Hillary Clinton can no more relate to these people in Las Vegas then you or I can relate to what it's like to be the Queen of England.

Hate Crime Laws To Toughen In NJ

The New Jersey Legislature is really into "feel good" legislation. Liberal judges don't enforce the laws already on the books. How is this going to make a difference. So, we do away with the death penalty for someone who brutally kills an individual in cold blood, but then again if they were thinking something racially or ethnically or sexually demeaning while they were committing the murder they what..... are sentenced to life in prison with weekly "sensitivity" training so when they get out for good behavior and murder again they'll remember to think good thoughts while committing the crime this time. The criminals have to be laughing themselves silly. How ridiculous!

Sorry For Slavery?

So our state legislators vote to apologize to people who weren't alive when an injustice occurred on behalf of people who had nothing to do with what the legislators are apologizing for without those they are supposedly apologizing on behalf of ever asking them to apologize in the first place. And that is supposed to accomplish . . . what?

Ironic isn't it; these same legislators who spend their time apologizing for the injustice of enslaving a people two hundred years ago refuse to find a way to free the citizens of New Jersey of all races which they (the legislators) enslave in debt, high taxes, levies, laws and fees that everyday force native sons and daughters out of this state. Actually ironic is a nice way of putting it. In reality, it's unconscionable and it's the members of the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly who should be ashamed of themselves and apologize to us for the shackles they place on all of us in 2008, not 1788. On second thought. Don't apologize. Just do something about it. That's why you were elected.

Just makes you shake your head in amazement doesn't it.

Watch Out! Here Come The Thought Police

When the New Jersey State Assembly meets in its final session this coming Monday legislators will vote on a measure which if approved, will go a long way toward eroding our First Amendment rights. The sad fact is, most people won't even pay attention and those who do take note most likely won't even understand what's at stake. The legislation is A-4591, a measure designed to toughen hate crimes laws in New Jersey. The State Senate already voted in favor of the companion measure last Thursday.

So what in the world could be wrong with being opposed to hate crimes. Well, for one hate crimes legislation in general is severely flawed in its logic. We've all heard the argument. Someone kills an individual. During the course of prosecution, we discover the murderer committed the crime because of their hate for the victim because of their race, gender or sexual orientation. Oh, really. Now we really have to punish the murderer. I don't get the logic. The victim is dead. Does it really matter what the assailant was thinking when he or she committed the crime. The crime is horrible enough. I've never understood what difference it makes what the person was thinking when they intentionally committed the crime. The result is still the same. The punishment should be to the fullest extent of the law. I don't care if the murderer was thinking, "Gee, I really hate this person" or "Gee, I have to kill them because if I don't they'll identify me to police when I leave the scene of the crime."

As I see it, it's really all about "feel good" legislation. We'll really give it to the murderer because of the hate. That will make us all feel better. It's ridiculous.

This latest addition to the proposed legislation as written, strongly suggests that any expressed disagreement to homosexual behavior, "gender identity or expression" could be construed as bias intimidation. In fact the bill specifies that if found guilty of "bias intimidation", the guilty party will be forced to attend "sensitivity training" which could have the effect of indoctrinating you to accept homosexuality or other "gender expressions" and reject your sincerely held beliefs.

My concern and the concern of many others is that this legislation could dramatically impact free speech and freedom of religious. How so, you ask? What if a pastor decides to address his congregation on his Biblically held views regarding homosexuality? Will he be hauled off to jail or sensitivity class? We're not talking about someone advocating violence against any group. We're talking about expression of deeply held beliefs. What if someone asks your opinion about a certain group of people or issue, are you free to express that opinion without fear of being reported to the "thought police." This is very dangerous. Our ability as a free people to openly express beliefs is a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution. Don't let that right be taken away. Call your Assembly representative and urge them to vote NO!

Someone help me here. I'm sensing an ideology which isn't too difficult to follow. Give me a series of social, cultural, political and religious questions and I'm certain I could tell you where this person would fall on every issue. I guess what I was really wanting to do as I followed this car was wave them over, offer to buy them a cup of coffee and try to figure out how they reached that ideology. We are all in one way or another products of our current environment, our upbringing, what we are exposed to and sheltered from. Sometimes I just have a hard time following the logic. Am I alone?

Hold On . . . Global WHAT?

The temperature hits 70 on a January day in Boston and all you hear is, "See Al Gore is right. We are warming at an alarming rate. Run for the hills!!!" Bet you don't hear much made of the forecast in central Florida for today. The weather forecasters are calling for a hard freeze and the possibility of snow flurries in Daytona Beach, Titusville and Palm Bay. That's right, snow flurries. And Al Gore gets a Nobel Prize and hundreds of thousands of dollars to speak all over an issue that in time will prove to be nothing more than politically motivated voodoo "science". I'm afraid it's not the weather outside that's frightful. It's Al Gore and his band of chicken little, sky is falling doomsayers.

Take The Test

I don't know anyone who really likes to take tests. So why on this first day of the new year am I asking you to do something you probably don't want to do? Because this test is very easy and the payoff can be enormous.

Every January 1st a majority of us sit down and decide how this year is going to be different. We think through what we are going to stop and what we will start; habits we are determined to destroy and others we are convinced we can instill in our daily routines. All two often it seems like we don't know where to start. In our desire to make this year so much better than the last, we tend to bite off more than we can chew and that usually results in dropping much of what we resolve by the end of the first week.

So here is a simple place to start because we all need to start somewhere. It comes in a statement by the American author Richard Bach who once said: "Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you're alive, it isn't." So figure out what your mission is and then go for it with all the gusto you can muster. You are alive today so make the most of it. This past year with my diagnosis of Cancer I was awaken to the reality that nothing in this life is certain and we are not guaranteed tomorrow. I still chew on that every day realizing over and over how I need to make every moment count, take in every breath with an understanding that it is a gift not to be squandered or taken lightly.

Another author Alexander Woollcott said that there is no such thing in anyone's life as an unimportant day. How true is that. Tell the expectant mother who's doctor says her baby needs two more weeks in the womb in order to survive that days are "unimportant". Tell the service man or woman preparing to head off to war that each day left with his or her family is unimportant. Tell a person who's been told they only have months or weeks to live that one day is unimportant. The sum of our lives is made up of "days".

Go ahead. Take the test. I dare you. Pinch yourself. Are you still alive? Then God who has breathed His life into you, isn't through with you yet. He has put you where you are for this time in history for a purpose. Don't miss your mission, your calling, your purpose.

Loosing Ground

There is an old saying in politics. "He who slings dirt, only looses ground." I emphasize the word old because it apparently doesn't apply to todays climate. I may sound crazy, but current research shows that the more negative a politician goes, the better his or her chances are of actually winning. Worse than that, is that much of the "negative" in advertising literature and commercials doesn't even have to be true or substantiated. The hard, cold facts are that even if an opponents accusations are challenged, by the time they are refuted or corrected, the damage has been done. With one day to go until Election Day, I am tired of hearing the radio and tv ads touting all the horrible and disgusting things a candidate for office has done; running that persons name through the mud over and over again and then having the nerve to end the commercials by saying, "that's why that individual is running one of the nastiest campaigns in history." What? Telling us nasty things about a person and then claiming that very person is himself running a nasty campaign. How twisted is that? And are we the electorate buying it? Apparently so. Why? Because we are sound bite, catch a comment here and there, disconnected people who do little to study the issues or the candidates, vote my name recognition alone or how someone looks or simply party line or in many cases, not show up at the polls at all. And then we complain over and over again about what we get. It's not the nasty politician loosing ground. We, the people are the ones loosing ground because we are digging our own graves.

I've Changed My Opinion

Having spent over 25 years in journalism, one of the first questions I still get from people who find out my background is, "Tell me, does the news media have an agenda? Is there really a bias in the newsroom?"

Until recently, my answer was two fold. First of all in the mainstream media there is an overall bias and it leans decidedly to the left. But I was always quick to add that the bias was not necessarily intentional. My point being that reporters by and large don't get together each day before they head out to cover the news and say, "Gee, how can we slant today's coverage?" It's just that most of the people working in journalism (for whatever reason) come from a liberal background. So, they look at the world through liberal eyes, so to speak. After all, every one of us comes to our jobs with preconceptions and sometimes they interfere with our news coverage. The stories we choose to cover, the way we approach stories and filter the information is going to be influenced by our past. The goal is to (as best we can) remove those bias's from our coverage. I've always felt most of time journalists tried their best reach for that goal.

But I'm changing my opinion. A new poll at journalism.org clearly shows a strong bias in the media and it is decidedly to the left. I'm afraid that many of journalists today are more interested in activism than journalism. With the strong influence of cable news and "opinion" based shows disguised as straight journalism, the line is not only blurred, it's in many cases erased. It's across the board in broadcast, cable, print and otherwise, the bias by the mainstream media is as left of center as it's ever been and getting worse. The evidence is all around us to point to a vast majority in the media who intentionally slant coverage and interject their own opinion into stories that are broadcast and printed under the banner of objective news.

The problem is not every consumer of news realizes this. They hear the commentary and opinion and take it as journalism, not as editorial. It's amazing that we live in a world where more information than ever is available at our fingertips and yet the electorate is less informed than ever before. We get our news in short sound bites and sensational copy vying for our easily distracted attention. Unless the American people wake up to this reality, we will find our nation heading even farther down a path of propaganda difficult to work our way out of.

Forever Grateful

This week I received some much anticipated and extremely exciting news. Those of you who have followed by blog over the past couple of months know that early this Summer I was diagnosed with a very rare form of Leukemia called Hairy Cell Leukemia. The good news from the start was the doctors admonishment to me that if there is any form of Leukemia to have, this is the one. One week of low Chemotherapy treatment and you are on your road to remission. I followed that procedure along with some Homeopathic treatment, increased vitamin and supplements and plenty of prayer from so many. The treatment was in August and this week the good news came.

On Wednesday when I went for my weekly blood test, I learned that my vital blood levels have for the first time in a long time returned to the normal range. I can't tell you how encouraging it was to hear the news. These past few months have been a time of uncertainty, anticipation, growing in faith, realizing the value of life and a learning experience for me and my family beyond anything we could have imagined. What we thought was going to be a relatively routine Summer, turned into a Summer we will never forget.

It is in times of testing that our faith is stretched and times of uncertainty that you learn where true certainty in life lies. My family and I thank all of you who have so faithfully prayed and expressed your love and concern during this time and we give all the glory for this transformation to our Savior Jesus Christ without whom we have no hope of a future. God has proven Himself to be faithful and I look forward to what He has in store now for me and my family.

When Words Define (Out of the Mouth...)

We had a discussion at lunch this week. By we, I mean a group of guys who pretty much all hold the same standards with regards to morals and things spiritual. The discussion somehow turned to music and in particular secular rap music. I don't know if my age is showing, but one of the younger guys at the table (who by the way agreed that much of what we hear in rap and much of the rock music these days is objectionable) seemed to be less phased by it all. Is it that as our society changes, we become more DE-sensitized? I say yes.

Now, I'm really no prude but it really gets to me when all around I have to not only subject my own ears, but the ears of my children to filthy, profane, sexually explicit language and even violent rap "lyrics" coming from idling cars in parking lots, mouths of teens hanging out in shopping malls and even parents scolding their kids in public.

To be sure every culture has its "profane" language and my goal in writing this is not to become the speech police by any means. My observation however is that even in my lifetime and most certainly in the time of my parents and grandparents, the language an increasing amount of people use "in public" without a second thought is more profane than ever. It used to be heard mostly by men and always in the company of ONLY MEN, rarely around women and NEVER around children. Now, even the "children" use the language. The words we use to communicate thoughts, ideas, frustrations, any emotion for that matter says volumes about us as a people. We have children, many of whom can't even conjugate a verb or properly punctuate a sentence communicating with each other in a vulgar sub-language that not only demeans others, but dumbs down our society all together.

It should be easy to see that our everyday language only reflects our cultural erosion. Just today, Fox News reported on a recent survey conducted by researchers at University of East Anglia in Norwich, U.K. They say a leadership study found the use of "taboo language" made the workplace more tolerable? Great, now we're being told it's not only OK to use foul language, it's healthy!

Who is to blame? What's to blame? Dr. Bill Cosby recently spoke about the lions share of the responsibility falling on parents. The entertainer has been at the center of a racially charged controversy since he ridiculed the poor grammar of some blacks. "I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said in Washington, D.C. at an event marking the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation ruling. Dr. Cosby went on to say: "The more you invest in your child, the more you are not going to let some CD tell your child how to curse and how to say the word 'n---r.' This is an accepted word. You are so hip with 'n---r,' but you can't even spell it," But this is not an problem exclusive to the black community. All of us need to take heed. Our children hear how we speak, they listen and simply repeat. Parents need to set the standards in the home.

My fear is that it will only get worse. When I hear young children curse and parents laugh it off. When teenagers, with no regard to anyone around them talk trash with each other; what words will their children and grandchildren use to communicate?

Someone much wiser put it this way: "Out of the abundance of the heart we speak" (Matthew 12:34). Jesus Christ said this over 2000 years ago. He spoke in terms of a vessel filling up with whatever has been poured into it and in turn overflowing. Laws of nature tell us that at some point what is in the vessel as it fills, will eventually overflow and it just so happens most of the time the outlet is our mouth.

Our words reflect our hearts. Guard your heart and that of your children?

Ed Davis Remembered

It's amazing that with so many people who cross our paths each day, only a few really stand out and leave a lasting impression. I remember growing up in the Atlantic City area and listening to Ed Davis on the radio. He was a broadcasters, broadcaster. A real pioneer who began his career in 1946. By the time I entered the field of radio, Ed was nearing retirement. It was the late 1980's I believe when as News Director at WMGM-TV we were looking for a personality to host a weekly seniors segment on our television newscast. Immediately, Ed's name came to mind and I made the call. That call proved to be a great one not only for us, but as I would later find out for Ed. Ed would often remind me of that phone call and his beloved wife Helen told me on more than one occasion, "you don't realize what that phone call did for Ed?" She told me that Ed thought his career was on the downswing and his new "assignment" with us gave him renewed vigor and enthusiasm. What I'm sure he never realized was the great impact he had on so many young people over the years who enjoyed his weekly visits to the tv station. Often he would bring homemade snacks for us, always was concerned about how we were doing and always, always thanked US for the opportunity.

Thank you Ed for your quiet way, your decency, professionalism, Godly example, humility, kindness and friendship over the years. Someone once told me that Ed told them that he looked on me as a son he never had. I could not be prouder of my friendship with such a great man. A gentle soul, at the age of 87 Ed went home this weekend to meet his maker whom he loved so much and to be reunited with his bride Helen whom he adored. My life is much richer for having crossed paths with Ed Davis.

More Good News!

From time to time I update my recovery from my Hairy Cell Leukemia (HCL). I had some more great news from the doctor this week. Every Wednesday I have my blood levels checked to see my progress since Chemo treatment back in August. For the first time, my levels are starting to turn in the positive direction. From White Blood Cell levels to Hemoglobin levels to Platelets, everything is on the upswing. White Cells and Hemoglobin are still below the normal level, but they are headed in the right direction. Thank God for His provision and thanks to many of you who have expressed your concern and offered prayers on my behalf and my families as well. The recent poll conducted on this blog asked the question: Should U.S. Public Schools align their curriculum to that of Mexican education standards? 100% of the respondents said NO. The poll was initiated in light of my blog entry of last week, "Remember The Alamo".
I know the majority of the readers to this blog probably lean more to the Conservative side of politics. However, that being said, I strongly feel that the majority of everyday you and me citizens of this country feel the same way. This is the United States of America; a melting pot made up of people from all cultures, backgrounds, creeds and colors. But the fact is over the 200 plus years of this countries history, we have evolved into a culture all our own. We are a melting pot. That means that immigrants, brought some of their own customs and traditions to "The New World", but they have not tried to turn the United States into their native country. they melted into our unique culture.
We are not Mexico. Spanish is not our primary language and it's time some politicians with a little spine spoke and up (in English) and laid it out the way it needs to be laid out. If you want to live in a Mexican culture or Muslim-style society, maybe this isn't the place for you. We welcome many of your traditions and customs, but don't try to turn the United States of America into Mexico City or Tehran.

Latest Blood Tests

Got my weekly blood check up and everything is pretty much running its course. Not much change with the exception of my hemoglobin levels which are the highest they've been since i went into the hospital. The latest readings are 10.3, still below where they should be and the numbers are higher in large part to the blood transfusion I got last Friday. My doctor remains encouraged about my progress and says real upward number changes could still take time. She said this was slow in coming; it could be slow in correcting itself. Thank you for your continued prayers and concern.

Strangled By Correctness

The latest Quinnipiac University Presidential Poll says its Rudy and Hillary on top here in New Jersey. The two are locked in a tight matchup with 45 percent for Mayor Giuliani and 44 percent for Sen. Clinton, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This compares to a 47 - 44 percent Giuliani lead July 5.

New Jersey voters say 56 - 27 percent that Giuliani makes decisions based on his principles rather than on what the voters think is best. Voters say 42 - 41 percent that Clinton votes based on voter opinion rather than her principles, the independent poll finds.

Anything can happen between now and the NJ primary, but one thing is certain. The Republican Presidential contenders must do something to differentiate themselves from their fellow GOP leaders on Capital Hill. Is it just me or do the two major parties seem increasingly similar. Sure, in their rhetoric they sound different. But when it comes down to it, they seem more similar than different.

We have become so strangled by political correctness, focus groups and poll numbers that few statesmen and women are on the scene. Why is that so many of us everyday run of the mill citizens can see so plainly the challenges that face our country domestically and on the foreign scene, but the politicians who should be more plugged in don't.

I think they do see the same things we see, they just lack the courage to speak up and do something. I say if a candidate emerged from either party who got past all of the spin and couching of words, that man or woman could take the country from storm and find an army of supporters right behind him or her.

Where is the Ronald Reagan of today? We need you now more than ever.

We Had Him In Our Sight

Remember just after 9/11 and we found out as a country that on at least one occasion we could have taken out Bin Laden. We missed the opportunity and history tells us the price we've paid. I only hope that 3 to 5 years from now we won't be saying the same about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There is strong evidence to show that Mahmoud was very much involved in the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979. By the way, no one has ever been brought to justice for that act of terrorism. Have We Forgotten The Alamo?

“Remember the Alamo”, a mantra taught to Texans and found in history books in classrooms across the United States. (If you’re not familiar, its the idea that proud Americans who fell at the hands of the Mexicans at the Alamo in San Antonio must never forget that defeat and the price soldiers and freedom fighters paid from the legendary Davie Crockett to Colonel William Travis and Jim Bowie all of whom lost their lives in that battle of 1836).

Well, apparently a lot of educators ( or those who control education) in Austin, Texas, San Diego, California, Yakima, Washington and now the state of Oregon have forgotten. It seems The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so course taught will be valid in both countries. You heard it right, not only have we decided to turn our heads and use United States citizens taxpayer dollars to educate illegal aliens, now your tax dollars will be used to introduce Mexican school curriculum in our public schools. The reason, to assist hispanic students. Tim King who is the director of Clackamas Middle College and Clackamas Web Academy says "Students come to us with such complex issues. "We've had to change in order to fit into each school scene, become more complex and open ourselves up to new situations."

Now Oregon officials simply say the approach is intended as a supplement to keep students learning in Spanish while also gaining English skills. I say, you want to learn Spanish take a foreign language course. Anything beyond that, (now I know this may sound harsh) But GO BACK TO MEXICO! What is happening to to culture in our country.

Until now, Oregon school districts generally have relied on bilingual aides or used Spanish material different from the English material others are studying.

Patrick Burk, chief policy officer with the superintendent's office of the Oregon Department of Education says that’s not enough. He said the idea is minimal disruption for immigrant Latinos. What about minimal disruption for immigrants from Italy or France, Japan or a Muslim country. Oh, I forgot, a school district in New York City has already taken care of that. Did you hear about the PUBLIC school in New York that uses public tax dollars to fund an all Muslim public school? Do you think we would stand a prayer of having a taxpayer funded all Christian public school. Not on your life.

We are in serious trouble if you haven’t figured this out already. A philosophy is overtaking this country that has already at best weakened us as a nation and will in the near future if someone does not stand up and stop it, destroy the very fabric of the United States Of America. MoveOn - Hillary, Chris & Barack

No doubt you heard about the U.S. Senate vote which overwhelmingly denounced an ad that appeared in the New York Times sponsored by the radical, left wing group, MoveOn.org. The ad was headlined: “General Petraeus or General Betray Us? Cooking the books for the White House.”

I just wanted to make sure you knew that while 72 Senators voted to condemn the ad, two of the Senators who want to be your next President refused to condemn it. Surprise , surprise . . . they are Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Senator Christopher Dodd. How about Senator Barack Obama, well he just didn’t vote at all, although he cast another vote only a few minutes before.

Are these the kind of “leaders” we want in the role of Commander In Chief? I think not.

Moving Forward

Went to the doctors for my weekly visit. The platelets are up, white blood cells are up however the hemoglobin is down which means I need another blood transfusion. My doctor again reminded me that I am very vulnerable to infection and fever because of the low white count and that it could last for up to two years. I'm feeling alittle tired; I'm sure its the blood count. So, I should be better after the transfusion tomorrow. She is very happy with my progress. I was told it could be up to 6 or 7 weeks before I see any major progress and that I am moving right along as expected. Thanks for your continued prayers and encouragement.

Progress Continues

Wednesday and that means my weekly visit to my doctor for a blood check up and the good news continues. My white blood cells are up slightly to 1.5 from 1.1 (they need to be above 4.0 to be normal). That means I'm still susceptible to fever and infection so your continued prayers are appreciated. My hemoglobin levels were down a bit from last week, however my doctor reminded me that last weeks numbers were only a few days after a blood transfusion. She is not concerned. The really good news is my blood platelets now fall within the normal numbers (the first time in months). So, I'll head back to the doctor next Wednesday for another check up. Prayfully and hopefully things will continue to move in the right direction. I feel great and remain extremely encouraged.

We Need To Remember

As painful as today must be for those who suffered such a terrible loss at the hands of terrorists, it is important that the rest of us be reminded of what took place on this date. Time has a way of distancing us from reality. The major network news shows will devote time to images of memorial services and flowers being laid, names being read and songs being sung. But although painful to watch, those news shows really should devote an almost equal amount of time to replaying images like the picture above. Not to be sensational, but rather as a sobering reminder. We do need to see those airplanes turned into torpedoes crashing into the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and a field in western Pennsylvania. We must be vividly reminded that there are those who are sadly still among us who want to wipe us off the face of the earth in the name of Allah. They openly reminds us all that they will not give up until we are destroyed.
As bold as our sworn enemy is in their relentless determination, it still amazes me that so many of my fellow Americans along with others around the world refuse to wake up to the fact that this is war for our very survival. Whether it's their unwillingness to confront the enemy head on or their belief that somehow we must engage in dialogue to learn more about each other and appreciate who we all are, it continues to baffle me how so many can be so naive about the real danger that confronts us.
That is why marking days like these and being reminded of the unspeakable horror that rained down on this nation is exactly what we need as a people. May we be reminded daily of the enemy among us. The more complacent we become as a nation, the closer we get to a time when all we've fought for, sacrificed for and died for as a people will be no more. Then it will be too late. God bless the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on that bright, crisp September morning six years ago. They had no choice on that morning. We who remain have a choice to do all in our power to see such a day never again occurs on our soil.

One Week Later

One week has passed since my last entry regarding my on-going health issues. Since my last post, I've visited my doctor and received some very encouraging news. My white blood count is the lowest it's been so far. While that may not sound good, it indicates that the chemo is working at killing off the bad cells. On the other hand my red blood cells have climbed the best level since the time I was told to head to the hospital back in June. The doctor told me that as the bad cells die off, it is making room for the good ones. I could still face the possibility of a fever or catching a virus in the days and weeks ahead because of my low resistance, so I appreciate your continued prayers.

My next visit to the doctor will be next week to again check my blood levels. I am feeling great and so far have had no reaction whatsoever to the treatment of last week. I give all the credit to my Lords protection throughout this ordeal.

Day Five

I am including a video in todays blog. In many ways it's hard to believe that the week is over after so much anticipation. God has been so merciful during this experience. If you've read Sharon's entries on our CarePage and my entries here, you know that my treatment went great. Today was a long day, as you will hear in my video blog. I was quite a bit tired earlier this evening, took a nap before dinner but other than that, I finished my 5 day treatment this afternoon and then stopped by to our Chiropractor (Richard Klingert) on our way home. I am confident his chiropractic and lazer treatment has made a difference in my physical preparation for this weeklong treatment. I've also taken advantage of Homeopathic treatment as well as extensive use of supplements and vitamins. I really believe the preparation going into this week has meant so much. By far, as I look back it's evident the prayers of so many is however the key.
So with that I ask you to continue your prayers in the days and weeks to come as I look by faith for healing from the HCL.

This experience has really opened my eyes to hurts and needs of others I have seen around me who are not as fortunate has I have been. It continues to be a time of growth in my life to say the least. I will continue to post progress and updates withe hopes of encouraging others in their faith and perhaps even be able to attract others who may be going through similar challenges.

I leave you tonight with this passage from the end of Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians in the New Testiment beginning in Chapter 1, verse 11:

"With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. 12We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.^"

Day Four

Feeling a little tired this evening, but I guess that is the least that can be expected. Just another all around good day of treatment. A little slow getting started this morning. My nurses told me the Chemo I am taking is flown up by courier from Florida. When I got to the treatment center they said the delivery had not yet come. After about 45 minutes to an hour it arrived and a two day supply at that, which will get me through the final day tomorrow. I asked the nurses what would have happened if it hadn't arrived, since I am on a five day consecutive treatment plan. They said they were wondering the same thing. But it all worked out. Thank the Lord.

By the time my treatment ended it was time to rush out to the blood center to get my blood drawn for testing in preparation for tomorrows transfusion, which I have to get in addition to the Chemo. It will no doubt be a long day, but I remain so grateful that this week has gone so well.

The prayers and encouragement of so many family and friends continues to mean so much. As we've said so often this week, we had prepared for the possibility of a much different week than it has been. Our God gets all the credit for the way it has turned out.

Day Three

Each day I am continually amazed at God's grace through this ordeal. Again, another day of treatment (now over half way through) and I feel none of the possible side effects I was forewarned of. As I sit each day and receive my treatment, watch and hear some of the stories of others at the Cancer treatment center, I am so grateful to God for His grace in my situation. God only knows for certain why I am called to go through this, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear to me as each day passes. For me, this whole season in my life and in the life of my family has meant spiritual growth, a time to count our blessings and renew ourselves to make the very most of each day. It has shown us the love of God's people, our family and friends and the overwhelming power of prayer. I can share with you that scores of people literally around the world have taken our requests before God. That alone is such a comfort and humbling at the same time.

My blood levels have gone down again some (as they were expected to do) and with the long holiday weekend ahead, the doctor wants me to get another transfusion this Friday. As for the Chemo treatment, hopefully Friday will be the last and anywhere from two to six or seven weeks, I should see my levels return to normal.

I am taking one day at a time and am still told I could feel the fatique and after effects a couple of weeks down the road. I'm ok with that and trust that as I said a couple of days ago, God has already gone ahead where I will be and I leave all of that in His hands.

With Sharon by my side, we stopped by our Chiropractor on the way to treatment. He adjusted me and used cutting edge laser technology that helps build up and repair cellular tissue. It is a holistic treatment I've taken advantage of for quite some time and the results are great. I've spent the time since first learning of my ailment to really build up my immune system with supplements along with homeopathic treatment. I want to take advantage of every thing that is available to fight this Cancer.

From there we went straight to the Cancer Treatment Center. They could not have been more accommodating. The treatment itself is a form of Chemotherapy called 2-CDA. It is a treatment for Hairy Cell Leukemia that has been used successfully since the early 90's. Before the 2-CDA, they gave me some anti-nausia medicine and a type of steroid (all of this intravenously). I've opted for a five day in a row, 2 hour a day treatment that lasts for one week. After that they continually monitor my blood levels and see where it goes from there. Usually, one round of treatment is enough to put it in remission.

I'm grateful to have such support from family and friends. It was great to have my wife right by my side during the treatment and she has been a such a comfort and support during this time.

As for my reaction on Day One? I really don't feel any different. Wasn't sure what to expect and so far I feel normal. Tired tonight but no more so than usual. The nurses say it could be a couple of weeks before my blood count may dip before it rises again. That could bring with it fatigue to some extent. We just don't know yet. So, that was my first day. The Next 5 Days

Last week at this time my family and I were just beginning what would be a great week of vacation in Sunny South Carolina. I'll write more about that in a future post. ( I decided to consciously take a break from the computer last week to enjoy my time with family, so I've got some catching up to do on the blog).

As for this week, it's a different story. The vacation is over and time for my much anticipated treatment for the Hairy Cell Leukemia. We've decided to go with the one week, five day treatment as opposed to spreading it out, once a week for 7 weeks. I am anxious to begin. I've been told what to expect; feeling tired, maybe a fever, risk of catching a cold or something like that and maybe some unsettling in my stomach. Other than that, my doctors say this week begins the road to remission. I'll keep you posted each day as to my progress. I do so much appreciate and covet your prayers for me and my family. I really believe it's through the power of prayer and a deep faith that we are able to move through this stage in our families life. So many of you have expressed to me your thoughts and prayers and I can't begin to tell you how much that means. I'll keep you posted. Its such a comfort to know that as uncertain as we are as to where the week with take me, our God has been there already and He knows. What a relief.

Milestones And Legacies

My Mother is turning 80. (She's the one to the far left in the picture. One of three daughters seen here with their Mother.) We had a special party with family and friends this past Sunday. I don't know about you, but for me family gatherings and special occasions like these cause me to reflect a lot. If I wax a little nostalgic and sentimental, please forgive me. As I watched a memory picture montage play to the music of Paul Anka and The Times Of Your Life, I couldn't help but think about all the people, places and events in our lives that shape who we are today. Pictures of my Mom's family growing up on a rural farm during the Great Depression only remind me of the values that were instilled in her. Values that she in turn passed down to me and my sister. The pictures of my sister and me as children, photo's of my Dad (who passed away when I was barely 15), they send a flood of memories and for me they are all happy. I wish so much that my Dad were here today to see the fruit of the times he spent and the love he shared that helped shape the person I have become today. And I wish he could have met my wife and got to know his grandkids. But somehow I believe God knows this and will one day make it all up.

I realize for some, growing up isn't something they remember fondly. Thankfully for me and my sister, we remember a household filled with love, laughter and good times.

Much of what I draw on today as a husband, father and friend had its beginnings indirectly in those tinted family photos of the farmhouse in the 1930's. Much of values instilled and ingrained into my very soul are values my parents passed on. As we celebrated my Mom's milestone, I can only pray that my wife and children will have such pleasant memories of our home and growing together as a family. We all leave a legacy to future generations.

Fortunately, I have a pleasant past and good memories to draw on as I build a legacy for my family. I realize we are all not as fortunate. While none of us can do anything about the past, we can all do something about the present and the future. What kind of legacy will you leave.

Moving Forward

Well, the doctors have made it official. The Hospital at the University of Pa. agree that I do indeed have Hairy Cell Leukemia (HSL). So, now its time for the treatment. We're talking one week (five days straight) of Chemo. The word is that this one treatment in a vast majority of the cases will put this disease in full remission, a statistic I am very thankful for. I feel fine and am looking with anticipation at going through the treatment. I'm set to begin two Mondays from tomorrow. There are supposedly little side effects. Throughout this whole challenge, my wife and I have had such a peace about this phase in my life and the life of our family. It may sound trite, but to have the peace that the God of the universe knows all about each one of us and cares so much, makes all the difference in the world. The Bible tells us of a peace that passes all understanding and we as a family can testify to the reality of that assurance.

Later this week I want to tell you about a family party we had today for my Mom who is turning 80. It was a great time of looking back, laughing, choking on a few tears and counting our blessings. Until tomorrow.....

The doctors need until tomorrow to reach that all important second opinion we are looking for in regard to my diagnosis. But that means that if they do indeed find it is Hairy Cell Leukemia, because of other circumstances, I'll have to wait another couple of weeks to start treatment. I'm fine with that and my doctors say there is no urgency to start right away. I really do want to get this all behind me, but God is teaching me everything in His timing. My favorite passage in the Bible is found in the book of Isaiah, chapter 40. The text ends .... but those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount with wings like eagles. They will run and not be weary. They will walk and not faint. Take the time to read the entire chapter. It really has a way of putting everything in life in perspective and realizing how small we are in comparison to our great God who watches over us.

His Head Is In The Sand

I'm really sick and tired of hearing about former VP Al Gore and his silly global warming campaign. His latest rant is that there is very little disagreement over whether global warming actually exists and that any disagreement that is out there is created and funded almost entirely by polluters.

There are plenty of scientists around the globe who have very serious questions regarding the issue of global warming. Why aren't they being heard by the mainstream media, because there is a larger agenda here and it is a political one. I'm sure many in the global warming camp are sincere in their concern for our planet the belief that something is indeed going wacky with our climate, but they need to be exposed to the mountain of evidence that raises very serious questions about the agenda Mr. Gore and others are trying to push down the throats of the rest of us. Do a search, look for yourself and you'll find plenty of counter arguments to refute the left wing bunch. Start with this article @

Cover your ears Mr. Gore... La, La, La, La . . . I can't hear a thing. Like an ostrich with his head in the sand, don't confuse me with the facts thank you, I'd rather go on believing that we're all about to melt off the planet. By the way, isn't this the same crew that 30 years ago tried to convince us we were on the brink of an ice age? If anything is contributing to a rise in temperatures, it's all the hot air coming from the left. Or so it seems to me.

I'm Learning Faith and Patience

Well, the doctors are pretty certain I have something called HCL or Hairy Cell Leukemia. They say if there is any kind of leukemia to have, this is it. It is not acute. That means they can treat it and in a vast majority of the cases it goes into remission for life. Thank you Lord. These past weeks have been a real growing experience for me and my wife. It is an ongoing process. While the doctors are nearly certain this is the diagnosis, we are still awaiting a second opinion from the University of Pennsylvania. There had been a delay in getting some slides to them and hopefully this week they will let us know for sure if it is HCL and if so, I will be begin what is only a 5 day treatment next week. God is good and through this has allowed us as a family to be an encouragement to others going through tough and uncertain times. I'll keep you posted on my progress and welcome your comments or questions.

Still Waiting

My test results due from my recent hospital stay are still inconclusive. As I wait for the results, I remain optimistic as to the outcome.

Anticipation

Many of you no doubt remember the old Carly Simon song, Anticipation. I like that song. I remember the anticipation as our family looked forward last year to going to Disney World. You know the anticipation of Christmas morning. Sometimes the anticipation is almost as good as the event itself. Almost!
In my case, the anticipation of test results from my hospital stay this past weekend isn’t quite the same as looking forward to Disney World. But I can say this week has been a week of good things. Times of rest, times with my family, times of reflection and the verse one of my children reminded me of while I was in the hospital has become more real to me than ever. No wonder it’s my favorite verse in the Bible.
Isaiah 40:31 “They that wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings as eagles. They will run and not be weary. They will walk and not faint.”
The anticipation of test results due tomorrow aren’t daunting at all. I have this perfect peace that is not easy to explain other than to say, when you know in who’s arms you rest, you can wait it out and know He has been there before you and already has it all figured out.

A Pause To Reflect

Maybe you’ve been there. The run, run, run of your life is suddenly interrupted. You may see it coming, you may not but none the less, life is interrupted. It happened to me this week.
As I write this entry, I’m sitting in a hospital bed, interrupted unexpectedly. I’ve felt a lack of energy lately and frankly got a little weary of hearing more and more people telling me that I looked somewhat gray and lacking color. So off to the doctor I went this week for a check up and series of tests. Come to find out, my hemoglobin levels are extremely low and I was in need of a blood transfusion. For someone who is never sick, never spent a night in the hospital (expect to be by my wife’s side when our babies were born), this has been an strange experience. I’m used to being the one leaving the room and waving good-bye to someone else. Not this time. I feel fine, have no pain and as yet the doctors don’t know what the problem is.
But I write this as background only to say that times of reflection are good. Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t like being here and the uncertainty can be un-nerving, the reflection time is good. One of my daughters gave me a hand made get well card and on it she wrote my favorite verse in the Bible. It comes from the book of Isaiah, chapter 40. You really should read the whole chapter sometime. The chapter concludes with verse 31 which says, “They that hope (or wait on) in the Lord will renew their strength. They will sore as with wings of eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.”
You ever get so busy making the most of your day, running around and working to make use the sun before it sets that you never take time to look up at the sun and appreciate the fact that you’ve been given another day to enjoy it?
Boy, I appreciate and love my family and in times like these, I’m directed to pause and take the time to thank God for all He is, all His has given to me and blessed me with and renew my strength to leave this hospital in His time to make the most of and appreciate my Creator and the gift of life He has given me.

A Day To Remember

So, my family and I visited the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Ocean City, NJ this morning. On a day where most of the nation spends time at the beach, in the mountains, eating hot dogs and hamburgers or shopping for all the sales, a few still take time to (if only an hour or so) to recall what the day is really all about.

I can tell you it was sobering to hear the names of the local men, those with the same hopes and dreams that all of us have. The only difference is their dreams never came to be. Life was cut short on some far off shore, in some damp, dark jungle half a world away. Families were left to grieve and we reminded that communities like Ocean City were left to only wonder what contributions these men might have made to their hometown. It really makes you think hard about the many things we take for granted each and every day. We have been given an awesome gift of life and freedom. I don’t want to squander that gift. Much too high a price has been paid to let days roll into weeks and weeks into months and years to not make a difference where God has placed each of us.

It’s good to remember if only to cause us to reflect and renew a commitment to bloom wherever we are planted in life. Now go make a difference wherever you are planted.
